Organized Labor Working to Expand Impact in Community

Labor unions have been partners with United Way for more than sixty years.  Traditionally, unions have worked with us through workplace campaigns to raise funds for United Way.  This year, because of the downturn in the economy, workplace campaigns are bringing in less money because of lay-offs and plant closings.  Unions such as the Western Reserve Building Trades, Teamsters 377, Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 396, UAW Local 1112, UAW Local 1714, AFSCME District 8 and many member unions of organized labor are stepping forward to help even more in these hard economic times.  What they are doing is making the principle of working together a reality, impacting all who live in our Valley, making this a community of neighbors.

Projects being undertaken by Union Community Activists and the Community Service Committee:

1. Coat drive to get 375 coats donated for needy
2. Raising funds for holiday baskets for out of work union members
3. Toy drive for children through Salvation Army and Toys for Tots
4. Repairing Food Pantry at church in Lake Milton so 100 families can continue to get help

Projects completed this past year:

1. Building of 8 wheelchair ramps in the valley
2. Repair of doors and other repairs at the Girard Multi-Generational Center
3. Distribution of 275 book bags to needy children
4. Preparation and help at Spaghetti dinners to benefit Help Hotline & Lena, Mason, Christian Children's Fund
5. Replacement and repair of plumbing at Ursuline Preschool
6. Collection of 375 coats for needy, both adults and children
